TO LEAD OR TO BE LEAD - Is It A Choice Or A Compulsion?


Dear Reader,

It has been so truly said by Otto von Bismarck [former President of Prussia (German State) in 19th century] — 'Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others.' It is the 10% existent wise men that lead - 90% trudge behind as followers – be it the political scenario, spiritual realm or world of science. 

Wise men become powerful and in the current Forbes list of such top 10 are 6 politicians, 1 religious head & 3 mega global entrepreneurs. In enterprises, when it comes to science and discovery, only 3 out of the top 10 have excelled in contributing to the world of medicine! Leaders are rare & leaders in medical domain are even rarer!


DETERMINANTS OF WISDOM

Intelligence is the accumulation of head knowledge. Wisdom is knowledge gained and it involves having the ability to understand and make good judgments based on experiences. Thus, intelligent are those who have knowledge about many things whereas wise are those who can apply the knowledge. 

Hence, sans knowledge there cannot be wisdom and, likewise, sans intelligence there cannot be knowledge! A normal I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient) is considered as between 90-110. A genius has an I.Q. of above 140 but most famed political, spiritual and science leaders measure 160 to 200! It is the I.Q. that determines the ability to be knowledgeable and it is their knowledge on a particular subject that determines one’s status as an acknowledged leader in this world in a particular domain! BEING INTELLIGENT IS BEING SMART!

OPINION IS 'EXPERIENCE' KNOWLEDGE MINUS WISDOM

Socrates, the Greek Philosopher states: dissemination of knowledge is different from mere opinion. Plato (another Greek Philosopher of same era of 300-400 BC) and George Eliot (famed English novelist of 19th century) have written: “Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge; it requires no accountability, no understanding.” Opinion is based on belief and belief is a mental acceptance of an evidence that one has merely accepted blindly sans any relevant background education and thorough research. 


DIFFERENTIATION OF LEADER FROM A FOLLOWER

There are 5 attributes and traits which differentiates a leader from a follower.

  1. Leaders enjoy newer challenges and embrace change smoothly. Followers are those who are happy to go thro’ life whilst maintaining a ‘status quo’.
  2. Leaders show ingenuity and strategize. Followers need step-by-step instructions.
  3. Leaders are pro-active and despise lack of progress. Followers are reactive and are content with inactivity.
  4. Leaders drive projects and people to the finishing line. Followers are dragged, maybe kicked and screaming, across the finishing line!
  5. Leaders are not paralysed by fear and face it head-on. Followers look for re-assurances when things get a little rough.


THE IMPLICATIONS OF A WISE LEADER 

FOR A CORPORATE

In sales and marketing the salesman is usually a follower and an implementor of a marketeer leader's dictate and strategies. The Companies that fail to thrive have definitely a ‘follower’ marketeer who lacks leadership skills and qualities. 

Management who are baffled at stagnancy or degrowth definitely need to go back to the HR drawing board and re-assess their top talent in terms of leadership qualities!


FOR A COUNTRY 

Increasing GDP and providing for health, food, housing and employment are political compulsions for the existence and sustenance of any country's leading party. The leadership actually emanates from the leader’s thirst for developing infrastructure and the ability of a wiseful and knowledgeable leader is in fulfilling the mission as envisioned!

The top 15 countries (2019) from infrastructural development perspective (scale: 1-100) are:

For quality of roads, India ranks 46 in the world!

What would have mattered was the leadership of the leader of the leading party for these countries. Do not confuse the infrastructure with Quality of Life rankings (2021) of countries – top 10 being: Switzerland, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, Australia, Iceland, Austria, Germany, New Zealand & Luxembourg in that order! (India ranks 65)


FOR THE PREACHERS

There is a stark difference between a ‘Guru’ and a ‘Baba’ (a fake 'guru'). Gurus are true spiritual leaders and hence we acknowledge our mentors on Guru Purnima on the 13th of July each year as a mark of respect, awe and admiration and thanksgiving. There is no ‘other’ such ‘Purnima’ for the simple reason that a Guru lives and leads an exclusively spiritual life and living, whilst ‘Babas’ have additional business skills and are entrepreneurial. This later 'quality' is the best evident proof of a ‘Baba’ being a mere follower.

The wisdom endowed knowledgeable Gurus are the real ‘Saints’, Yogis’, ‘Monks’ or ‘Maharishis’ and the like. They are the true leaders and never followers.  


FOR THE HEALERS

The evidence-based Medical Professionals is a mere follower of guidelines and a prisoner of his / her experiences. It is the wisdom-laced Key Opinion Leader (KOL) Dr that actually lay down various ‘Treatment Guidelines’. The patient seals his / her fate depending upon his / her choice of health provider – the knowledge-based KOL or the evidence-based follower health care provider.



The difference in evidence-based versus knowledge-based is also the determinant of why some doctors treat coronavirus infections, heart disease and diabetes aggressively or otherwise. There is one quick clue to judge whether one has followed the right knowledge-based KOL or otherwise. If diabetic has co-existing leg pain (neuropathy), heart disease or eye complication the treating Dr is definitely a mere evidence-based ‘follower’ practitioner. 


TAKE HOME MESSAGE

The knowledge-based ‘Leader’ scores over ‘Follower’ individuals. However, since the 'followers' are a dominant 90% majority - whether common man, ‘fake’ gurus (‘Babas’) or evidence-based Drs, there is a real grave threat today to progress in the world of politics, peace in spiritualism realm and well-being in the health arena since the mere followers have seemingly taken the onus to prevail upon the respective true leaders in all fields and walks of life!
