- Promising Alternative Medical Practices

(For The Uncured & Un-allayed)

Dear Reader,

Medicine is vast and immense as an ocean. No one can fathom the boundaries and the solve the mysteries come what may be the qualification and the IQ level. It is God's bounty. The net boom has enabled an explosion of scientific data and no matter how hard one tries reading all of it on a particular topic of interest, it can never be harnessed - let alone digesting and assimilating the same. Then amongst all this chaos in the jungle of medicine-related data how can one derive the best of advantage for self and loved ones.

Being in practice of general medicine for near four decades, my surmise is only your neighbouring friendly GP is your solace. Your GP being a medicine graduate does stand a better chance of dissecting optimally the contrasting data, albeit he must be open-minded and he needs to have an addiction for knowledge probing. What matters in medicine is not an effort to become well-versed with current prevalences in diagnosis and therapies - this is too simplistic, more important is to relate the discovered scientific data with biochemistry and pathophysiology. And this is not every GP's cup of tea - and never ever possible for a literate individual with no formal medical training.

In fact, it is the cellular and molecular level co-relation of disease processes and therapies that will ultimately make a difference in satisfactory prescribing and an effective measure for the concerned sufferer. Only hours of studying each day over many years can such knowledge can become working memory of the doctor.

Skill-sets differ in all specialists across industries and the medical profession is no exception. Answers are there for all the troubles the body may have but the best solution provider needs to be identified in our vast country. The whole world has magical healing to offer what with their upgraded infrastructures and awareness of the greats in medicine world. But, as individual healers, the expertise amongst Indian doctors has never lagged; just as it requires a diamond merchant to identify the locate a diamond amongst gravel, the friendly GP fills the same boot in medicine world.

A word of caution: we as Indians are God-fearing and die-hard worshippers. Our belief system is strong and our loyalties overpower our sensibilities. This is like digging your grave when it comes to applying one's such philosophy whilst seeking of healers of health. Unless one has an open- and a reasoning mind, with an inquisitive attitude, for seeking medical solutions one cannot successfully identify the best for you, and your loved ones’ well-being.

It is not only to do with doctor fraternity; the rich legacy of healing system prevalent in ancient India has more to offer in terms of alternatives to modern healing which is beyond comprehension by scientific minded but those with funnelled vision.

  2. Points well made. Acquiring and updating developments in the medical filed , assimilating that on a continuous basis is a prerequisite for an effective medical practice. Like yourself, I hope most doctors do that. You mentioned religious faith. Unfortunately such faith determines all responses in India , be it doctors or receiver of treatments. There is no scientific mindset evident. Education is rarely assimilated in life. Prejudices exist right across. This is not only true in medicine but all walks of life. It may not change for long . The grave will be dug!!
